What the Society does

The Society aims to create a greater awareness and knowledge of the history and heritage of Lincolnshire and assist the discovery and recording of new and relevant information.

Society activities:

  • arranging lectures, conferences, local history fairs and site visits on many topics related to Lincolnshire's history, archaeology and industrial archaeology;
  • publishing quarterly and annual periodicals, and a series of more substantial and academic books as part of a longer term programme;
  • running a bookshop at Jews' Court - operated by volunteers - which carries an extensive selection of new books on Lincolnshire, a thriving second-hand department, and both new and old postcards;
  • encouraging schools to promote Lincolnshire's history and archaeology;
  • facilitating research and field investigation;
  • working with affiliated groups throughout the county.

SLHA GROUPS

In the late 1980s the Family History Committee of SLHA broke away to form the independent Lincolnshire Family History Society (LFHS). Prior to this date there had been several local groups meeting around the county (e.g. Grimsby, Scunthorpe, Horncastle, Louth, Sleaford, Spalding). Most of their meetings were to do with family history although, inevitably, they also dealt with local history.

When LFHS was formed most of the groups opted to move under the umbrella of the new society. However, the groups at Sleaford and Spalding decided to remain within SLHA and to cover a wide range of interest in their meetings and other activities. They are now supported financially by SLHA but have their own committees and determine the content of their programmes.

SLEAFORD

St Denys's Church, Sleaford

The aim of the Sleaford group is to organise a programme of talks and events for everybody interested in local history, family history or archaeology in the area. Monthly meetings are held at 7.30 pm on the third Thursday of every month (except August) at St Denys’s Church Room, off the Market Place close to the centre of Sleaford. Non-SLHA members are welcome on payment of a donation at the door. Refreshments are usually available.

Besides regular monthly meetings the group also arranges occasional outings and research projects. There is a bookstall at each meeting selling a wide variety of publications and the group maintains a growing library of manuscript and typescript items (such as parish register transcripts. (See Events).

The group also publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Sleaford Historian. A complete set of newsletters is available for reference in Sleaford Library.
